Our web hosting includes free 301 redirects.
A 301 redirect tells web browsers and search engines that a web page or site has been permanently moved to a new location. 301 redirects specify the address to which the resource has been moved. Web browsers will typically follow 301 redirects to the new location automatically, without the need for user action.
A 301 redirect should be used whenever a website is moved to a new domain name (URL) so that search engines will quickly change their indexes and, in theory, preserve the search engine rankings that the site had at the previous domain.
Another interesting use of a 301 redirect is for consolidating www and non-www domain names. This can be beneficial from the standpoint of seach engine optimization. Let's say for example your domain is yoursite.com. If you had a website on this address it would display in people's browsers if a visitor typed "www.yoursite.com" or "yoursite.com". Since both addresses resolve to your website then it makes sense that search engines index both urls thus dividing your rankings. The benefit of the 301 redirect is that it can permanently consolidate "yoursite.com" to "www.yoursite.com". This way both names resolve to only one address.
